Ericeira is a tourist town located 35 miles northwest of downtown Lisbon, 18 km from Sintra and 8 km from Mafra. It is a parish in the municipality of Mafra, with 12.19 kilometers ² and 6597 inhabitants (2001). Density: 541.2 inhabitants / km ².

Ericeira Village is a very old village, presumably crossing and installation of the Phoenicians The population was generally made by people of the sea and formed over many centuries a geographical ethnic group, called «Jagoz», separated from other habitants of the region.

The source of the name Ericeira that means, "land of sea urchins», because of the many sea urchins that abounded on its beaches. However, most recent research suggests the hedgehogs and not the sea as inspiration for the name.
